Sports

An excellent way of releasing that competitive demon inside all medics in a socially acceptable way.

Badminton

Medics badminton is a friendly society, welcoming players of all abilities whether you are a top county player to absolute beginners. We play friendly games and also take part in tournaments with other medical schools where in recent years we have shown great success. We hope to continue this success again in 2017/2018 and are hoping to take part in a Varsity competition involving Leeds and Manchester University. We are a social society and often head down to the local pub after sessions as well as organising meals and nights out as a club. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own racket as we have plenty that you can borrow. If you are interested or have any questions drop us an email or contact the president or secretary directly. We hope to see you at medic’s badminton next year!

Time and location: Wednesday 7-8:30pm at King Edward VII lower school, Darwin lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S10 5RG

Bouldering

Bouldering is climbing without a harness or helmet. Our bouldering club is a friendly open club that meet on Sundays and head to the climbing wall. We'll climb for a few hours and then go to the pub for a drink, some food and a game of pool. Come and see what we're all about.

Cricket

Hello Cricketers, we are Sheffield Medical School Cricket Club (NAMS Champions 2016, 2017)

If you are partial to a spot of corkball and a helping of questionable Sheffield curry, then this may well be the club for you. We enjoy nothing more than the riveting contest between bat and ball followed by some exquisite Indian cuisine, and perhaps a few beverages. We are a friendly club, welcoming cricketers of all abilities. Emphasis is very much on the social and fun side of cricket! We play mostly outdoor 40 and 20 over games, with some indoor cricket through Winter. Nets will run after Christmas on Thursday evenings at Birkdale School from 8pm with the friendly SUSCC and these are paid for with a £20 membership fee covering 10 sessions, we also provide club kit for those without their own.  We would love to welcome you down to training, and look forward to playing with you over the course of the Summer!

Football (Mens)

We are a student run university football team comprised from over 70 active members of both Junior Doctors who've graduated from Sheffield and Medical students currently studying at the University of Sheffield. Our 1st team plays in the 7th tier of English football Sheffield and Hallamshire division 1 after winning division 2 in the 16/17 season. We also had impressive showings in the county and league cups beating may higher ranked teams to reach the quarter and semi finals, respectively. Our 2nds play in the University intra mural league against other society football teams whilst our third team is more of a casual 11 a side team playing in a informal intra mural league structure.

Beyond our 11 a side teams there are 6x 6 aside teams playing weekly where places are prioritised to first and second years. We cater to all abilities and offer affordable football weekly with the optional extra of many varied socials throughout the year and national and international tours.

Training takes place every Thursday at 9pm at Goodwin.

1st and 2nd teams play matches on Saturdays.

6x a side teams play their fixtures at 6pm Tuesdays.

Hockey

Sheffield Medics Hockey Club is a welcoming and friendly society, consisting of 65 members, that gathers every Friday at 6pm to play some hockey, followed by food and drinks afterwards. We enter two 11-a-side mixed teams into the NAMS trophy, which the 1st team has won 4 years in a row, as well as arrange friendly fixtures for our 3rd team allowing plenty of opportunity to play full sided games. We also play in the intramural league which is another enjoyable opportunity to play some 6-a-side hockey with fellow members of the club.

Throughout the year we hold several socials and events. The highlights being our Christmas and End of Season meals, pub golf, Halloween social and best of all, tour to secret European destination. We also take part in mini-Nams where one of the northern medic hockey clubs host for a weekend and the rest join for some fancy dress and games. The club also puts on various teaching when it comes to exam time, whether that’s peer teaching lectures for the 1st and 2nd years, or OSCEs for the 3rd years.

Medics hockey is a great way to meet new people and friendships are formed that last throughout all 5 years at university and longer.

Rugby

The Club has around 75 members, fielding 3 teams every Saturday in the local Yorkshire leagues with the 1st XV playing in Yorkshire 3, as well as taking part in the NAMS competition against other medical schools across the country. Of all the rugby clubs within the university, our team plays the most games and gets the most people involved at different levels, including those with no experience at all. We train in the evening couple of times a week, Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and so do not get in the way of studying. Every Saturday the games are followed by socials at a local pub before heading to Pop Tarts at the SU for possibly the best university night you will ever experience!

We have had recent success in NAMS, winning in 2014, and NAMS 7s competitions which we won in 2016.

Medics Rugby is the ideal club for everyone, both those desiring a competitive level of rugby to those who just want a laugh and an amazing night out. Joining us will be the best decision of your uni career.

Running

Sheffield Medics Running Club is a friendly group of runners who meet two or three times a week for training sessions. Whether you are wanting to improve your fitness, get to know Sheffield and its beautiful surroundings, or get involved in races, all abilities are welcome! Members of SMRC compete in various local races such as the weekly 5K Park Run, the Sheffield 10K and Half Marathon, as well as national and international races so if you are up for something a little more competitive then we can help you to get started.

We host a number of socials throughout the university year as a fun way to get to know each other a bit more for example freshers orienteering runs to show new members the sights of Sheffield, seasonal fancy dress events such as festive Christmas runs (mince pies and mulled wine included), food-based gatherings and we have exciting plans for even more.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner who has never run before or whether you’re much more experienced, anyone can get involved and develop a passion for running so put on your trainers and come along!

Training start location: Meet outside Morrison’s in Broomhill.
